We are holding an event to provide you with the latest information on our Brexit work and to discuss our up to date guidance for members. The event will be chaired by our Director of Strategic Relationships, Stephen Denyer, under Chatham House rule.
Representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the DTI and BEIS are also likely to attend.

A reminder of our key messages is as follows:
· Growing concern that the UK could exit the EU without a deal, has led the Law Society of England and Wales to publish a series of papers giving solicitors guidance so they can take some steps to mitigate some of the risks.
· The first tranche of papers gives advice on some of the potential rule changes where a deal goes wrong between a business here and in the EU, and how we should approach data sharing if we quit the EU without any agreement. There is also a paper on what steps UK lawyers practising in the EU should take in the coming months.
Our main messages on no deal for Government are:
· In the event of a no deal, the UK would become a third country in relation to the EU. It is of paramount importance that an orderly transition to whatever follows UK membership of the EU is achieved. The likely breadth of changes means that citizens and businesses – and indeed EU member states themselves – will need time to familiarise themselves with changes to the system and adapt.
· A no deal scenario would be extremely challenging for the UK legal profession, which is a vital part of the UK economy and a facilitator of global Britain as a trading entity. It would also introduce opaqueness where previously there has been clarity – for example in relation to a whole range of rights enjoyed currently by our citizens. Where cross-border disputes arise between businesses in the UK and EU countries, the resolution mechanisms available to EU citizens and entities will no longer apply if we leave without a deal.
· Law cuts through every area of life – family, data, disputes between businesses - and of course we export more in professional services than we import.
